Sustainability

ASDA is committed to more sustainable development and to reducing the impact of our stores on the environment. We are continually trialling sustainable materials and features in our build programme. We are constantly looking for ways to reduce the amount of energy and other resources we consume and to limit waste. We invest the savings we make into delivering better value products and services to our customers.

Energy

In 2008, we gained planning permission for our first two mega watt wind turbine at our Falkirk depot. We are currently seeking permission for two more at other depots.
We opened our second low carbon store in Bootle, Merseyside, in 2008.
By 2012 we will reduce the energy requirements of our estate by 20%*.
By the end of 2009 we will have reduced new store energy requirements by at least 30%**.

We have reduced the amount of energy that our new stores consume by 38% per square foot on average. We are working hard to improve this further. Our energy performance is independently audited.

* Based on the estate at 2005.
** Based on a typical 2005 new ASDA store.

Energy performance of new stores

Energy use is being monitored at each of our new stores and compared with energy use per square foot against a typical ASDA store built in 2005. The following table shows the performance of some of our new stores since they opened:

Energy performance of existing estate

The table below shows the performance of some of our existing stores in terms of their energy use per square foot in 2008. They are measured against the average energy consumption of stores in 2005:

Waste and packaging

Our seven purpose built recycling centres helped us to recycle 150,000 tonnes of cardboard and nearly 9,000 tonnes of plastic wrapping in 2008.
Since 2005, we have removed 47,000 tonnes of excess packaging from thousands of products and achieved our target of reducing the weight of our own brand food packaging by 25% at the end of 2008. We are working to remove a further 5% by the end of this year.
We aim to send zero store and construction waste to landfill by the end of 2010.

Transport

We are switching more of our road freight to rail and introducing double-decked trucks and fuel efficient, automatic gearboxes. This has saved 43 million road miles - equivalent to 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This represents a 40% reduction in fleet emissions since 2005.
Our local sourcing hubs helped us take 8 million food miles off the road in 2008.
