A central part of the proposed redevelopment will be a modern and high quality ASDA store.
The store will have a 40,000 square foot sales area, bringing a range of fresh goods and services to Newhaven, including the premium Extra Special range, Organics, Fairtrade and ASDA's healthy living ranges. The store will also stock the award-winning George clothing range and a smaller homewares, music and DVD offer.
ASDA will enhance the existing shopping offer in Newhaven and will help keep people shopping locally. Retail studies by both ASDA and the Council show that one store currently dominates the local grocery market, attracting around half of retail trade within Newhaven, with many local people leaving Newhaven to shop elsewhere. Delivering real supermarket choice to Newhaven will benefit local shoppers and the town.
The store will create up to 350 full and part time jobs for local people. ASDA provides quality employment opportunities and values its colleagues - in March 2009, ASDA was named 'Innovative Employer of the Year' at the prestigious Oracle Retail Week Awards.
ASDA believes that sustainability and affordability go hand-in-hand. The store in Newhaven will be at least 30 percent more energy efficient than the new stores ASDA built in 2005, and by the end of 2010 ASDA will be delivering zero waste to landfill.
ASDA is the UK's best value supermarket, having won the Grocer Gold Award for the lowest supermarket prices for the last 12 years.
