A Great Employer

Creating employment is a vital part of building sustainable communities. ASDA always aims to recruit colleagues locally.

ASDA currently employs over 14,000 colleagues in the South East.

ASDA is proud to have the highest colleague retention rates and lowest absentee rates in the supermarket sector. We were recently named Innovative Employer of the Year at the prestigious Oracle Retail Week awards (March 2009).

Recruitment and training

We are regularly voted one of Britain’s top employers and are committed to the career and skills development of our colleagues, providing great in-house training in a wide variety of roles.
We work with the Government as part of its Local Employment Partnership scheme which seeks to encourage long term unemployed people back into the labour market, including single parents and incapacity claimants.
Since 2001, our in-house training and development programmes have enabled nearly 3,000 hourly paid colleagues to progress into managerial roles.
ASDA has an established relationship with Remploy, the leading provider of employment opportunities for disabled people. In 2007 and 2008, ASDA recruited over 200 Remploy candidates each year into long term employment.

Pay and benefits

Over 55,000 of our 165,000 colleagues have a stake in the business through our share ownership scheme.
All colleagues with more than six months service become eligible for an annual bonus measured on profit performance.
We offer a 10% colleague discount, a sharesave scheme and many voluntary benefits including discounted private medical cover.
We also recognise the importance of work life balance. We offer a number of packages for temporary leave and career breaks to colleagues.

Diversity

We are one of Britain’s biggest private sector employers of the over 50s and have over 35,000 colleagues aged 50 and above.
We were the first supermarket in the UK to introduce an ethnic uniform option to embrace the cultural diversity of our colleagues.
