ASDA stores are very much at the heart of the communities they serve, championing local people, issues and values. Our colleagues play an active role in supporting both local and national causes.
In 2008 we launched ASDA Sporting Chance to give children access to free sports sessions during the school holidays.
In the South East, we are working with over 130 different Sporting Chance partners who are providing free activities within ten miles of our stores. ASDA supports these partners financially - thereby helping to invest further in sport and youth facilities in local communities.
We are also working with the charity Sports Aid to support some of the UK’s best up and coming young athletes. By 2013 over 730 athletes each year will be selected and provided with a grant of £500 to support their development, as well as gaining additional fundraising support from their allocated local store.
ASDA has formed an exciting partnership with the Bike Club consortium, a group of charities led by CTC, the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation. The money raised by Pedal Power will set up community bike clubs for young people and families who have not had the chance to find out how great cycling can be for fun, health and transport.
Each ASDA store has an in-store Events Co-ordinator who, along with colleagues, decides which local charities to get involved with and to support.
Last year our South East colleagues raised over £320,000 for charity, of which over £250,000 was for local causes, and spent over 5,000 hours volunteering in their local communities.
Nationally, ASDA supports BBC Children in Need, the baby charity Tommy’s and breast cancer charities through our Tickled Pink campaign.
